The Ounce Scale MN Child Care Project Update

Mary Scott

The Ounce Scale Project is in transition this year, and we are working with DHS and Metro State University to position Ounce within the redefined Professional Development System. With curriculum and assessment in the forefront of this work, Ounce will certainly have a place. As meetings and planning move forward, it is especially important that you let me know your thoughts, suggestions, concerns and questions so that I can represent you at the table.

DHS has allotted a very small contract for continued Ounce work in this transition year.  Activities outlined in this contract include:

  1. Provide ongoing trainer contact with Ounce Research Project (ORP) control group practitioners

  2. Promote success and accuracy with assessment of infants and toddlers, for non-ORP practitioners

  3. Maintain current level of Ounce trainer professional development and resource support

  4. In coordination with DHS and RFP grantee (Metro State), plan for transition of Ounce activities.

While I will be involved in the transition planning with DHS and Metro State, my goal is to have you (Ounce trainers) provide the direct contact and support to caregivers and programs implementing Ounce. The actual plan for this is still in progress, but will certainly involve telephone, email and some on-site consultation to providers. It will also include efforts to make our Eager-to-Learn website a more effective tool for offering support to both Ounce Scale trainers and Ounce Scale practitioners.

The Ounce Research Project (ORP) has just completed the implementation phase and is currently entering and analyzing data. We have learned a whole lot through the project on using Ounce and on the training model. We will have a more definite sense of what this all means in spring.  I will keep you posted about this exciting work!

Ounce will be offered on-line in January and again in April. (Thank you, Dawn VanHees for teaching these!)  If any of you are interested in taking this as an Ounce refresher, please let me know. We are still working out the details, but participation would be on a space-available basis.

Please keep in touch!  I am always interested in your Ounce activities, experiences and questions.  Take care.
