Surge Support Child Care Project Update

Julie Wasiluk

The Surge Support Child Care project has a database of over 480 licensed family child care providers and centers in the state of Minnesota offering child care services to military families!!

During the months of June, July and August of 2007, the Surge Support Child Care project has documented over 566 hours of free child care that has been extended to military families. Participating providers have donated child care in their homes, at child care centers, at Armories during Family Readiness Group meetings and at special events where programming for military families has been planned. Currently, NACCRRA is providing funding for five child care centers in the state to offer Saturday child care twice a month to families of deployed Army National Guard Members and Army Reservists.

Twelve trainings have been scheduled around the state to introduce child care providers to the unique circumstances that children and families are faced with when a loved one is serving our country in the military. Professional development coordinators will be encouraged to offer additional trainings in the future.

The video clip “Remember Me” is now available on DVD and VHS tape. Lisa Schuelke’s story of her husband’s deployment will be available soon. Trainers are encouraged to request copies of these items when needed. Requests can be made by calling me at 651-290-9704, ext. 119 or via e-mail juliew@mnchildcare.org.

An agenda for training delivery of the six hour Surge class has been requested from several trainers. When an agenda is drafted it will be forwarded to trainers for input. The need for providers and educators to have an understanding of the stressors of reintegration/reunions for children and their families will remain vital as we move into welcoming the soldiers home. For this reason the Surge office will begin to develop an agenda for presenting a three hour class which deals specifically with reunions.

If you have any suggestions on what information should be included in the six hour training or the three hour reintegration training please send ideas via email to juliew@mnchildcare.org.

As always, thank you for your support of all children!
